Chapter 9

Ryan looked forward to returning to his home brimming with domestic bliss. Jen’s job would be over in less than a week, and he planned to ask her out again. This time with a little more skill. He frowned. Her plans were unclear after she finished with Clement. It sounded like she’d been having trouble finding work. He should see if the theater program could be revamped to include a position for her. But then they’d be coworkers again, and he wouldn’t date her. She never indicated she’d consider Clement for the long term, either. She may not even want a career working with teens.

He debated getting a gift for Jen, finally deciding on a decoratively bound collection of Shakespeare’s plays. It was personal, while not being out-of-bounds for coworkers who spent a lot of time together. It was weird that he wanted to buy her things. He studied mixers on sale for longer than probably was normal. He even carried around a soft pink sweater for a while until he talked himself out of it. He wanted to take care of her, fix her job problem, make her smile.

It turned bitterly cold while he’d shopped. He drove through the drive-thru at the coffee place and rolled his window back up while they prepared his order. The barista handed him three drinks in a cup carrier, and he headed home. He hoped Hannah would convince Jen to stay to help decorate the tree. He parked in the drive and bounded up the steps. The gifts would be safe in the trunk until after Hannah went to bed.

As he unlocked the door and stepped inside, he was assaulted by the smells of hot fry oil and designer perfume. Jen didn’t smell like that. Only one person he knew did.

“Dad! You’re home. Guess who’s here?” Hannah poked her head into the hall followed by Jen, already wearing her coat. “Miss Easler, please don’t leave yet.”

“I really need to head out—school tomorrow, you know. You spend time with your family.” Jen gave Hannah a hug and turned to Ryan. “The kitchen is all cleaned up, and I left a plate of cookies for you and Hannah. It was fun.” Her voice rose a pitch, and Ryan suspected it hadn’t all been fun. She rambled on. “I couldn’t reach to put the fryer away either, so it’s still on the counter. There were egg whites leftover, but Hannah used them to make Cami an omelet because she doesn’t eat carbs.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on,” Ryan whispered, glancing beyond Jen’s shoulder toward the kitchen. “Cami’s here? Jen, I promise I didn’t expect her. Are you all right? She can be a bit much, but she’s essentially harmless.”

“No, it’s fine. I just need to get home. Thank you for letting me take over your equipment and use your kitchen.” She turned to Hannah, who wore a bereft expression. “I’ll see you tomorrow. Thank you so much for your help.”

“I thought we were going to decorate the tree and watch a movie.
